The Council of science and Industrial Research

The Council of science and Industrial Research(CSIR),the premier research and development organization in India was setup in 1942.It is an autonomous body which aims to provide industrial competitivenes, social welfare, strong science& technology base for strategic sectors and advancement of fundamental knowledge.

The strategic road map for CSIR as it stepped into the new millenium envissaged:

· Re-engineering the organisational structure,
· Linking research to marketspace,
· Mobilising and optimising the resourse base,
· creating an enabling infrastructure, and
· Investing in high quality science that will be the harbinger of future technologies.

The new science and technology policy-2003 announced by the government of India in the early year of the new century presents science and technology with a human face and emphasizes realities such as facing open, global competition, need for examining social, economic and environmental consequences of S & T and aggresive international bench marking and innovation. If advocate strong support for basic research and emphasizes manpower build-up and retention as important challenges. It advocates dynamism in S & T governance, through the participation of science and technologies.

Today CSIR is recognised as one of the world's largest publically funded research and development organisations having linkages to academia, research and development organisations and industry.

The NIIST,previously regional research laboratory at Pappanomcode,Trivandrum is the most prestious of the 38 laoratories under CISR.

WATER SHED DEVELOPMENT

Product:Process to preserve under ground water and to check soil erosion.

Application:Sustainable water supply in dug wells or hand pumps awment drinking water supply and irrigation potential, check soil erosion, reclamation of waterlands.

Feature:The concept of 'hill to valley' is adopted to arrest rainwater at selected points in the catchment area.In the hilly terrain,as well as discontinous trenches are made while in the valley, continoud trenches, boulder check dams or ponds are constructed on secondary or tertiary drains. These water storage structures recharge the ground water and raise the water table level. This also checks soil erosion.Micro water sheds can be planned in semi-arid zones. It takes three year for market impact.

Commercialisation:Commercialised.

Economy:200/ha.

Investment:Rs 4000/ha in a typical case.

Equipment:Normal soil digging tools.

Institute:Regional Research Laborotary,Bhopal.

RAIN WATER HARVESTING

Product:System for storage of rain water at domestic or community level.

Application:Useful in areas where water supply schemes are expensive(eg:hills),ground water in saline(eg:coastal areas, islands) to suppliment existing provisions.

Feature:For a domestic sheme, rainwater is gathered from the roof tops, courtyards and small catchment platforms and stored hygenicallyin FC tanks after purifying through filters. In community level shemes, larger catchment areas are used for collecting run off water in underground tanks, fenced reservoires or directly water to lakes.

Commercialisation:widely implemented in north-eastern regions of india.

Economy:As per requirement of the consumer.

Investment:Rs 2 lakhs for 2000 litres capacity tank.

Equipment:Masonry tools,smith tools,casting moulds.

Raw materials:Treated roof or platforms,inflow system,by pass system,terrocement water tanks of 200-2000 L capacity.

CeBIT - Hanover. Vodafone will launch smart phones with DVB-T on the German market, said Friedrich Joussen, CEO Vodafone Deutschland. The new phones are able to receive existing DTT broadcasts.

For the moment, Vodafone is just showcasing the technology in Hanover with two models, the HB620T from LG and the T600 DVB-T from GSmart. With these new phones, there is no need to wait for the outroll of the DVB-H services. GSmart already showed its DVB-T phone at last year’s CeBIT.

Vodafone plans to improve mobile TV over its own UMTS network using the (QVGA) HD technology with Video-Codec

Leadis Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: LDIS), an analog and mixed-signal semiconductor developer of color display drivers, LED drivers, audio ICs and power management ICs for mobile consumer electronic devices, today announced that flat panel display industry veteran Dr. I-Wei Wu had been elected to its Board of Directors, effectively immediately. With Dr. Wu's election, the Leadis board now consists of nine directors, including seven independent directors.

Dr. Wu has 25 years of experience in the flat panel display industry, in both engineering and management functions. Dr. Wu currently serves as an industry consultant for Prudence Capital, a venture capital firm based in Taiwan, and as a visiting professor at the Institute of Technology Management, National Chiao-Tung University. In 1999, Dr. Wu founded, and later served as Executive VP and Managing Director of, Toppoly Optoelectronics Corporation, a flat panel display manufacturer, from 2000 to 2005. Toppoly merged with Philips Display Mobile Systems in 2006 to form TPO Displays Corporation, one of the largest small- to medium-size flat panel display manufacturers in Taiwan. Dr. Wu started his career at Intel Corporation in 1983, working on the development of Intel's first successful CMOS product. He then joined Xerox PARC to work on CMOS device physics and processing technology, and in 1987 he successfully led a team to demonstrate the world's first LTPS CMOS devices on large glass substrates. From 1997 to 1999, Dr. Wu was in charge of the Flat Panel Display Program for the Electronics Research & Service Organization (ERSO) of the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Taiwan. Dr. Wu holds a B.S. degree in Physics and M.S. degree in Materials Science, both from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, as well as a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of California at Berkeley. In 2002, he received the Industrial Greatest Personal Contribution Award from the Ministry of Economy, Taiwan Central Government. In 2003, Dr. Wu was conferred the distinction of SID Fellow by the Society for Information Display.

"Leadis has announced its strategy to shift the focus of its display driver business from generic product development to differentiated display drivers utilizing advanced technologies and innovative intellectual property," said Tony Alvarez, President and CEO of Leadis Technology. "Dr. Wu's career has focused on the development of new technologies for flat panel displays and the processes that help bring these technologies to the marketplace quickly and efficiently. His international working experience, particularly his knowledge of working with Taiwan-based partners and suppliers, is a great match for Leadis. We're extremely excited to have Dr. Wu on our team and I look forward to working with him."

ipods

iPod is a brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple and launched on October 23, 2001. The line-up currently consists of the hard drive-based iPod classic, the touchscreen iPod touch, the video-capable iPod nano, and the screenless iPod shuffle. Former products include the compact iPod mini (replaced by the iPod nano) and the spin-off iPod photo (re-integrated into the main iPod classic line). iPod classic models store media on an internal hard drive, while all other models use flash memory to enable their smaller size (the discontinued mini used a Microdrive miniature hard drive). As with many other digital music players, iPods, excluding the iPod Touch, can also serve as external data storage devices.

Apple's iTunes software is used to transfer music to the devices. As a jukebox application, iTunes stores a music library on the user's computer and can play, burn, and rip music from a CD. It also transfers photos, videos, games, and calendars to those iPod models that support them. Apple focused its development on the iPod's unique user interface and its ease of use, rather than on technical capability. As of October 2007, the iPod had sold over 141 million units worldwide (stated in "The Beat Goes On" conference) making it the best-selling digital audio player series in history.

How is technology affecting the society?
